Scottish Literature with Tom Sommerville: Scottish Poets of the Two World Wars

10.15am-12.15pm Thursday 5th March 2015 for 13 weeks.

Fees: £78 full price; £39, concession

Central Library, George IV Bridge, Edinburgh, EH1 1EG.

This year, and, indeed, ever since the First World War, attention has focused on English poets who served in these conflicts. This class intends to shift the interest to Scottish writers.  A few are well-known names but there are also many fine pieces from men who were moved to write, for the first time, as a result of their traumatic experiences and from those at home in Scotland, mainly women, whose responses to the wars remain deeply moving.

The class will be run on informal, friendly and entirely democratic lines in which all opinions will be respected.
