Wearing the Colours

To mark the centenary of the great women’s suffrage procession  through the streets of Edinburgh in 1909, a re-enactment was organised by Gude Cause on 10th October 2009.

In the build up to the re-enactment, WEA held a range of classes for our learners and members in Edinburgh, Falkirk and West Lothian to explore the women’s suffrage movement in Scotland.  The Suffragette Jewellery Workshop organised in partnership with Drummond Community High School  class investigated the little known topic of suffragette jewellery which was used by the suffragettes as a potent tool for political exression.

Each student researched, designed and created a brooch or pendant in memory of, and reflecting, the struggles and achievements of the Suffragettes.  Their jewellery was displayed in the Votes for Women exhibition in the Museum of Edinburgh.
