The Best Day of the Year: Bo'ness Children's Fair

Fairs, festivals, gala days are an important part of the cultural life of communities across Scotland.  One of the longest running celebrations of this kind in Scotlland is the Bo’ness Children’s Fair which was first held in 1897.  In 2005 WEA began working with the National Library of Scotland and the local community of Bo’ness to research and create a documentary film celebrating 100 years of the Bo’ness Children’s Fair.

The Best Day of the Year brings the Louis Dickson archive Fair films available to the community again and is interspersed with many interviews with local people and new film footage showing the people of Bo’ness prepare for the 2007 Fair. The Best Day of the Year was premiered at the re-opening of the Bo’ness Hippodrome Cinema in May 2009.

This film, together with a bonus DVD containing more than 4 hours of Louis Dickson's silent films of the Bo'ness Children's Fair dating from 1912 to 1960, is available from the WEA Lothian office, price £15.
